Coating Thickness Gauge Tokya CTG-1

With the paint thickness gauge you can quickly and easily measure the thickness of the paint surface. Almost a must-have accessory for car polishers. WE RECOMMEND!

Tokya CTG-1 is a measuring device that shows the thickness of the paint surface. The paint thickness gauge can measure the total thickness of the paint surface, varnish and coating on the sheet metal. The gauge makes it very easy to detect, for example, chipped or overpainted areas on the car. The gauge works on the most common iron and metal-based surfaces (Fe and Nfe). The gauge is able to measure layers of up to 2 mm, with an accuracy of 0.02 mm.

Measuring the thickness of the paint surface before polishing is recommended, especially if the car is not completely new, pulled from the package. The paint surfaces of used cars may have been patched and polished by the previous owner. There is nothing more frustrating than a perfectly smooth polish and then suddenly the paintwork cracks due to thin paint. We recommend always measuring the paintwork before starting to polish.

Quick guide

Using the device:

Always make sure that the device is calibrated before starting to measure. Calibration instructions are in the user manual.

The measurement is done by pressing the meter gently against the paint surface, making sure that the measuring device is perpendicular to the paint surface. Repeat the measurement in several places. For example, it is a good idea to take dozens of measurements on the hood, from different sides of the hood. It is worth writing down the results in a map-like manner so that you can monitor the thinning of the surface during polishing.

Measuring is not rocket science, but easy and convenient!

Tips for measuring:

Painted surfaces:

The paint surface is usually formed as follows, there is a primer on the bottom, then the actual paint and finally the gloss varnish. It is not worth breaking the varnish on a painted car, as it does not look very nice. The paint thickness gauge measures all these layers in one measurement, but does not tell you the thickness of the varnish alone.

A good place to check the average varnish thickness is often to take the measurement results, for example from under the hood, where there is no varnish layer, but there is primer and paint. By measuring from here, you will get information about the thickness of the layer formed by the primer and paint. ALWAYS measure from several different places, and form an average thickness based on them. When you know the layer thickness formed by the primer and paint, it is easy to calculate the thickness of the average varnish layer on top by measuring the surface from the outer shells. Always take measurements from several places, as the thickness of the paint and varnish varies slightly.

There may also be layers of significantly different thickness under the paint surface, which usually indicates that it has been painted, sanded, patched or a similar repair. You should proceed with extreme caution when polishing such areas.

Directly painted surfaces:

You can easily measure directly painted metal sheets directly from the paint surface. However, note that the primer is also included in the measured result. If you find a metal sheet somewhere that only has primer, you can measure it in a similar way as for cars with a lacquer finish, this way you will get a closer look at the true thickness of the actual paint surface.
